A Guide to Your Publick House Wedding in Sturbridge, MA

Reasons to Love The Publick House Historic Inn

As the name suggests, The Publick House Historic Inn has been around since the 18th century. It is centrally located right off the 1-84 and 1-90, it sits right on the border of Massachusetts and CT making it easily accessible for your family and friends from around New England. This historic venue has, of course, been modernized over the years, offering a perfect balance of original charm and modern amenities.

On the property, you will find not one but two historic restaurants, a Bake Shoppe (I highly recommend the famous peach tarte), an outdoor patio, a fitness center, a spa, and a variety of accommodations. Plus – it’s dog-friendly!

Hosting your wedding at the Publick House Inn promises to be a wonderful day for intimate elopements or larger celebrations of up to 220 guests. They have 9 different banquet rooms available for rent with a delicious catering menu and drinks that can be customized to your preferences! They have an area available for your wedding party to hang out and get ready as well as a coordinator to help with the logistics on your wedding day. You can mix and match the locations below for your ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception to customize your day to you.

Ceremony Locations

The Publick House offers several options for your ceremony, each with its own distinct atmosphere. All areas include lighting and electricity for music and microphones, so you won’t have to worry about extra expenses.

  • Garden Gazebo: Surrounded by flower gardens, the gazebo is ideal for couples seeking a classic outdoor ceremony in the warmer months. It’s also stunning in the fall, with the changing leaves providing a beautiful backdrop as you say “I do.”
  • Hillside Arbor: Another great outdoor option, the arbor overlooks beautiful stone walls and perennial gardens. It can be decorated with florals that match your color scheme, and guests will be seated on long farmhouse benches.
  • The Meadow: For a more expansive outdoor setting, The Meadow offers an open space in front of an old oak tree where you can exchange vows surrounded by nature. It’s a versatile option that can be tailored to your wedding theme and is great for large gatherings.
  • Paige Hall: This grand ballroom features post-and-beam cathedral ceilings, grand windows, chandeliers, and antique features, providing a timeless backdrop for your vows. In the winter, it’s beautifully decorated for a Christmas ceremony or reception.

Reception Locations

There are various reception spaces to choose from, depending on the size and timing of your wedding. The two most popular are:

  • Paige Hall: This historic hall is not only ideal for ceremonies but also transforms into a wonderful reception space. With its high ceilings, grand chandeliers, and warm wood tones, Paige Hall has an elegant and sophisticated atmosphere.
  • Tent: Open May – October, the largest option for an outdoor reception is the permanent tent. It can be customized with lighting, decor, and seating arrangements to create a personalized experience that reflects your style. The paved floor ensures you won’t need to worry about uneven grass or purchasing a dance floor.

First Look Locations

One of my favorite moments of your wedding day is the first look, and the Publick House offers several spots.

  • Gazebo, Arbor, Meadow, Paige Hall: Any of the ceremony locations can also double as stunning first-look spots, each offering a unique backdrop that captures the anticipation and emotion of the moment.
  • Additional Options: Beyond the ceremony locations, the Publick House grounds are filled with charming nooks and scenic views that are perfect for a private first look. Whether it’s a quiet garden path or a secluded spot under a centuries-old tree, there’s no shortage of beautiful locations to choose from.
  • Off-site Location: If you’re a big New England history buff, consider taking a short drive to Old Sturbridge Village for a private first look and portraits.

The Publick House In Different Seasons

The Publick House is honestly perfect for a wedding in any season in New England.

  • Spring: Imagine a garden ceremony with blooming flowers and fresh greenery. You can do a mix of indoor and outdoor spaces when the weather is cooler.
  • Summer: Perfect for both outdoor ceremonies and a tented reception. The Little Red Barn patio is a beautiful spot for cocktail hour.
  • Fall: We all know New England is famous for its fall foliage, and the Publick House is no exception. The vibrant autumn colors create a stunning natural backdrop in your images.
