Unique Engagement Session Ideas in Massachusetts

Taking engagement photos is a wonderful opportunity to practice being in front of the camera before your wedding day! However, they can be anything but ordinary! Your engagement photos are a great way to take professional photos that capture moments that are truly unique and personal to you and your partner.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with some incredible couples across Massachusetts who chose locations and themes that held special meaning for them. Here are a few unique engagement sessions that will inspire you to use your engagement session as a reflection of who you are and your relationship.

Planning a Unique Engagement Session

To make your engagement session truly special, think about the key moments and interests that define your relationship. Think about how to use this time together to get some great photos you will cherish for years to come! I love to make people who feel uncomfortable in front of the camera feel comfortable. When we choose something to do that is meaningful it allows you to just play, laugh, and enjoy your session as I capture these spontaneous moments and therefore give you great posts!

Some suggestions to think about:

  • First Date Locations: Revisit or recreate the place where you had your first date. Whether it’s a charming café, a park, or a mini-golf course, these locations add a personal touch and evoke wonderful memories of your relationship.
  • Shared Hobbies and Interests: Incorporate activities you both love. If you’re both avid readers, bring your favorite books. Love hiking? Choose a beautiful trail. These elements make the session more relaxed and authentic.
  • Favorite Places: Think about places that hold significance in your relationship. It could be a local brewery, a historic site, or even your own home. Familiar settings can help you feel more comfortable and natural in front of the camera.
  • Seasonal Considerations: Different seasons offer unique backdrops. Autumn foliage, spring blossoms, summer beaches, or a winter wonderland can enhance the aesthetic of your photos. Choose a season that best represents your story or when you feel your surroundings are most beautiful.
  • Future Use of Photos: Consider how you plan to use these photos. Whether for save-the-dates, wedding websites, or décor at your wedding, having a vision for their use can help narrow down ideas and themes. This will help you get the most out of your investment!
  • Communicating with Locations: If your chosen location is a public place, make sure to communicate with the site to get permission to photograph there. Some places may require permits or have specific guidelines for photography sessions. Working with your photographer to ensure everything is arranged in advance can help your session go smoothly.

Mini Golf Engagement Photos

Taralyn and Aaron had their first date mini-golfing, so it was only fitting to recreate that moment at Crystal Caves in Auburn, MA. I surprised them by having their names displayed on the marquee when they arrived! This session was a playful and nostalgic trip down memory lane, and a great experience

A Unique Engagement Session with Beer, Pizza, and LOTR

Erin and Paul wanted a mix of traditional poses and personal elements in their engagement photos. We set up a cozy picnic at Borderland State Park, complete with their favorite beer and pizza. As avid fans of Lord of the Rings, they also brought along their beloved LOTR books. This session perfectly blended their shared interests while still getting some typical engagement photos!

Unique Couples Photography in Massachusetts

Danielle and Nick’s engagement session was anything but ordinary. They chose to wear plague doctor masks, a nod to both the pandemic and their love for Halloween. This unique choice highlighted their playful nature and shared humor at Schoolmaster Hill. They had initially wanted a Halloween wedding but opted for an offseason date instead. Their engagement photos still gave them the chance to have some Halloween-inspired photographs.

Old Sturbridge Village Engagement Photos

Nicole visits Old Sturbridge Village’s Christmas by Candlelight every year with her family, making it the perfect backdrop for her engagement session with Steve. The historic charm of the village added a timeless feel to their photos, beautifully capturing their love story in a place filled with personal significance.

Personal Ideas for Couple’s Photos

Meena and Barry’s engagement session was a heartfelt tribute to their life together. They included their beloved farm animals in the shoot, highlighting their shared passion for farming. The session also featured Barry’s grandfather’s home, adding a touch of family heritage and nostalgia.

Meaningful Locations for Engagement Photos

Chris and Emily’s engagement session was at the property that Chris’s family used to work on. Chris spent a lot of time there as a kid. He was actually one of my classmates in college so I was thrilled to capture their engagement photos. While we were in college he did a beautiful photo project on this same place so it was awesome to see it come full circle!

Fall Engagement Session at Purgatory Chasm State Reservation

Michelle and Chris suggested Purgatory Chasm State Reservation for their engagement photos and I loved it! They love to be outdoors so a fall hike was perfect! Their session was fun and laid-back and we just enjoyed being in nature together. It was a unique spin on a classic fall New England session.

I am passionate about helping you plan your engagement photos to reflect your unique love story. Whether it’s a meaningful location, a favorite activity, or a shared interest, we’ll work with you to plan a session that is authentically yours.
