When it comes to capturing your wedding photos, you deserve to look and feel like your true, authentic selves. Many couples worry about being “photo-ready” or conforming to expectations they see online. The reality is, that the more personal elements you bring into your photos, the better you’ll feel—and ultimately, the better you’ll look! It has always been my goal to make you feel comfortable while taking your wedding photos!
As a Boston photographer, I’ve worked with countless couples who tell me they feel awkward in front of the camera. One of my strengths is helping couples express their unique personalities while feeling comfortable and confident. Here are a few examples of couples who embraced their individuality and, as a result, received beautiful photos on their wedding day.
How to Not Feel Awkward in Wedding Photos
Melissa and Bill wanted an intimate elopement with just their closest friends and family. Their small ceremony at The Farm at Summity Wynds and their reception at VIA in Worchester felt true to them. When Melissa wore her bright pink heels for the day! It was her way of saying, “This is me!” The playful photo of them flipping the camera off perfectly captured their laid-back vibe.
Unique & Personalized Wedding Day Ideas
Kirsten and Chris were married at Point Breeze on Webster Lake, a venue that holds special significance for them. They keep their boat in the marina and enjoy a weekly date at the restaurant—just the two of them, without their kids—so they felt right at home! Kirsten and Chris incorporated many personal touches, from Chris arriving on his custom Harley Davidson to portraits taken on their boat out on the lake. They even jumped into the water in their wedding attire! Embracing spontaneity and fun resulted in incredible photos. By focusing on enjoying the day rather than worrying about posing for “the perfect shot,” Kirsten and Chris felt comfortable and at ease throughout their celebration.
Martiza and Mike also opted for an intimate gathering at Larz Anderson Park in Brookline MA, keeping things short and sweet. They didn’t want a long ceremony with hundreds of guests that didn’t feel authentic to them so they had just their parents there to witness them tie the knot! Martiza made her hairpiece and bouquet, which added personal touches that made their day feel special and uniquely theirs. You could see in their body language they were just relaxed and happy!
Emily and Dave aimed for a laid-back vibe on their wedding day, selecting Isham Family Farm in Vermont after attending other weddings there. Dave, a musician in a wedding band, serenaded Emily with a special performance and also played with the band during the celebration. You can see in their photos that they were living in the moment and stress-free!
How to Feel Comfortable in Your Wedding Photos
Brit and Chad are self-proclaimed nerds who wanted to celebrate at the Currier Museum of Art. They specifically asked to host their wedding during the Open World Exhibit, which includes many video games they love including Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, The Sims, and Final Fantasy. Despite initial worries about looking awkward and including five kids, they looked completely comfortable in their wedding photos! I focused on making them feel as relaxed as possible. I captured many candid moments that truly represented them vs. doing lots of formal portraits.
Things to Look for in a Wedding Photographer
The common thread in these stories? Each couple incorporated elements of who they are! Their photos reflect their confidence and authenticity because they are just being themselves! You don’t have to be a model or have extensive experience in front of the camera! My job as your wedding photographer is to meet you where you are. I want to ensure your photos reflect the real you and you both as a couple!
